Wednesday May 30: Pre courses

Can't intubate, can't oxygenate (CICO)

The CICO (formerly know as CICV) scenario is a relatively rare event during airway management in Anaesthesia. The CICO scenario may be more frequent in specialties such as Intensive Care or in the Emergency Department owing to the patient population and nature of the underlying emergent medical issues. The Fourth National Audit Project (NAP4) done by the the Royal College of Anaesthetists in the UK shows poor management of cases where PEO (Percutaneous Emergency Oxygenation) with either a scalpel or a cannula was performed. This was mainly due to lack of provider skills, materials and preparation. It is a professional responsibility as medical doctor to be prepared for such an eventuality.

In this course you will get hands on manikin practice in CICO management and PEO techniques according to the ANZCA (Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists) Algorithm. A CICO scenario can happen in any type of patient in any type of setting. The ANZCA Algorithm strives to manage CICO scenario’s in all patients in all settings. This Algorithm includes cannula and scalpel techniques and assumes to always use a cannula technique as first technique for PEO. During the course there will be ongoing discussion on how these techniques have been established as well as material choice and common mistakes and pitfalls as to have the candidates optimally benefit from the course.

Enhancing your ultrasound skills

The ultrasound section will entertain you with an ultrasound precourse, focused on enhancing your ultrasound skills. We will be practicing on people as seen in your own emergency department. We aim to stimulate your learning curve on core ultrasound for unstable patients. Be prepared for hands-on the probe all the time, with little time for plenary instructions. The targeted audience consists primarily of emergency physicians (or residents) seeking to expand skillset and built confidence for using ultrasound. This course is not intended for absolute newbies. Furthermore performed scans cannot be added to your certification portfolio.

Learning to take the heat

Training for stress

The focus of the workshop is to develop an understanding of how stress affects the performance of health professionals when caring for the critically ill, and more importantly, how we can teach others to handle stress.

This workshop explores the techniques we can use to deal with extreme stress, and how we can train to use them effectively to perform under pressure. Techniques include self-talk, visualization, tactical breathing, cognitive unloading, and how to train others. The faculty includes experienced emergency physicians and simulation trainers.
